Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has announced a major leadership restructuring that sees senior figures, including Junet Mohamed, removed from top positions. The move was confirmed in a statement on Monday following a joint meeting of the coalition’s central organs.

Coalition leader Kalonzo Musyoka disclosed that Junet Mohamed has been ousted as Leader of the Azimio Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly. Suba South MP Caroli Omondi will replace him with immediate effect.

The statement further noted that a number of prominent politicians had ceased to be members of the coalition’s key bodies. This included former Cabinet Secretaries Ali Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, and Opiyo Wandayi, nominated MPs Sabina Chege, Abdi Noor Omar Farah, and Adan Keynan, as well as party officials David Pkosing, Mishi Mboko, Abdul Haji, Isabella Wangechi Githinji, Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, and Solomon Kuria.

According to the coalition, those removed had either accepted public appointments or aligned with rival political formations, actions deemed incompatible with continued leadership roles in Azimio.

The leadership changes come weeks after Kalonzo Musyoka was appointed Party Leader of the Azimio Coalition Party, succeeding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The restructuring had earlier included replacing Junet Mohamed as Secretary-General with Caroli Omondi.

Kalonzo’s elevation followed months of internal debate over the direction and control of Azimio after Odinga’s death, with senior figures pushing for a refreshed leadership and strategy.

Critics within Azimio have questioned the process, arguing that proper legal and constitutional procedures for altering coalition leadership were not clearly followed. Supporters of Junet Mohamed had previously challenged Kalonzo’s authority in the realignment.

The reshuffle is part of a broader effort by the coalition to consolidate its ranks and reposition itself as a viable opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections, though it has sparked tensions among factions.

Azimio officials say replacements for the positions vacated by those removed will be announced soon as part of an expanded leadership structure aimed at strengthening the coalition.

The changes mark a significant realignment in Kenyan opposition politics, with Kalonzo Musyoka emerging as a key figure in steering the coalition through internal disputes and preparing for the electoral contest ahead.
