The Ghana Football Association has reportedly appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Ghana national football team (Black Stars) ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision marks a major leadership change for Ghana as the country seeks to strengthen its technical direction following a period of inconsistent performances in international competitions.
Queiroz, one of the most experienced international football managers in the game, is widely known for his extensive work with national teams across different continents over the past three decades.
His appointment is being viewed as a short-term, high-impact project aimed specifically at preparing Ghana for the World Cup tournament scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Portuguese tactician previously managed several national teams including Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, and South Africa, building a reputation for defensive organisation and tournament experience.
He also served as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he was part of one of the most successful coaching setups in European football.
Ghana officials are expected to rely on Queiroz’s vast experience in international competitions, particularly his record of guiding teams through difficult World Cup group stages.
The Ghana Football Association has not yet released full contractual details, but reports indicate his role is focused primarily on the 2026 World Cup cycle rather than a long-term rebuilding project.
Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, with preparations for squad assessment, tactical restructuring, and international friendlies likely to be prioritised ahead of the tournament.
