Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır will start in goal against Manchester City, with new signing Senne Lammens set to remain on the bench.
Bayındır, 27, has been given the nod despite a mixed run of form, having yet to keep a clean sheet in his three Premier League starts this season. However, his experience in high-pressure fixtures and past heroics — including key penalty saves — appear to have convinced Amorim that he is the right man for the derby.
Lammens, 23, arrived from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth around £18 million earlier this month. While the Belgian stopper is considered one for the future, Amorim has made it clear that he will not be rushed into the starting XI. Lammens impressed in Belgium with 12 clean sheets in 60 games and is seen as a long-term successor in United’s goal.
United are still adjusting following Andre Onana’s loan exit to Trabzonspor, leaving Bayındır and Lammens to battle it out for the No.1 shirt. With City’s formidable attack looming, Amorim is banking on Bayındır’s size, experience and composure to anchor his defence in one of the season’s biggest fixtures.
The decision sets the stage for a dramatic derby, with all eyes on Bayındır as he faces the ultimate test against Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring City side.
