Atlético Madrid have made it clear they do not intend to sell Julián Álvarez to Barcelona, amid growing speculation linking the Argentine forward with a move to Camp Nou. Club sources say the Spaniards are unwilling to strengthen a direct La Liga rival and would rather see Álvarez leave for a foreign destination if a transfer occurs.
The forward, who has been a key figure in Atlético’s attacking setup, is tied to the club until 2030 with a high release clause. This contractual situation gives the club leverage, and Atlético leadership has stressed that any exit would only happen on their terms, at a valuation far above Barcelona’s reported budget.
Reports suggest that while Barcelona have shown interest in Álvarez as part of their search for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, negotiations have not advanced due to the financial gap between the clubs. Atlético’s stance effectively rules out any sale to a domestic competitor.
Atlético president Enrique Cerezo has publicly supported this position, emphasizing that Álvarez is considered untouchable within the squad. He added that the club has no intention of weakening its La Liga campaign by selling to a direct rival.
Sources indicate that if a transfer were to happen, clubs outside Spain, particularly in the Premier League, would be more likely candidates. The club sees a foreign move as preferable, both for financial reasons and to avoid strengthening a local competitor.
