Athletics Kenya (AK) has officially cancelled the national trials that were scheduled for January 30–31, 2026, in Nairobi ahead of the World Athletics Indoor Championships. The federation cited unavoidable logistical and organizational challenges as the reason for the decision.
The trials were originally intended to serve as the primary selection mechanism for Kenya’s team, allowing athletes to compete head-to-head and secure spots based on performance. The cancellation comes as a disappointment to several elite athletes preparing for the championships.
In place of the trials, AK announced a time-based and merit-based selection process, which will evaluate athletes using performances recorded during the qualification window. A technical panel will review results to determine the final squad.
The federation confirmed that the new selection system will cover key indoor events, including the men’s and women’s 60 m, 60 m hurdles, 400 m, 800 m, 1 500 m, and 3 000 m disciplines. This ensures that all events are considered for representation in Poland.
Athletics Kenya urged athletes to continue rigorous training and maintain peak form throughout the indoor season. Officials emphasized that consistent performance remains crucial to selection under the revised process.
The cancellation does not reflect a reduction in ambitions, with AK stressing its commitment to fielding a competitive team and building momentum ahead of major outdoor competitions later in the year.
Officials promised further communication on team selection and logistics as the championships approach. They encouraged athletes, coaches, and fans to stay engaged with updates from the federation.
Some observers have described the decision as pragmatic, citing the lack of adequate indoor facilities in Kenya, while others note that athletes may need to seek additional competition opportunities abroad to meet qualification standards.
