Arsenal In Talks To Extend Visit Rwanda Sponsorship Amid Criticism

Arsenal are in discussions to extend their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda, despite ongoing criticism over the club’s association with the East African nation’s tourism board.
The Premier League side first partnered with Visit Rwanda in 2018 on a three-year deal that placed the logo on the men’s and women’s shirt sleeves, before extending the contract in 2021. However, the partnership has been controversial, with supporters and human rights groups questioning the ethics of the arrangement.
Rwanda, led by President Paul Kagame — an Arsenal supporter — has faced scrutiny for its human rights record and alleged involvement in regional conflicts. Earlier this year, the UK government suspended aid to Rwanda over its reported support for the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Human Rights Watch’s 2023 report accused Kagame’s ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) of repressing political opponents, noting that several opposition members remain imprisoned on questionable grounds. Arsenal fan group Gunners For Peace, which protested the sponsorship in April, said renewed discussions over the deal raise concerns about the club’s commitment to its stated values.
