Apple Inc. has issued a fresh security advisory urging iPhone users to immediately update their devices after cybersecurity researchers uncovered a highly advanced spyware exploit targeting older versions of the iOS operating system.
According to the company, the vulnerability allows attackers to gain deep access to affected devices without requiring user interaction, a technique often referred to as a “zero-click” exploit. Such attacks can silently infiltrate a phone through messages or network activity, making them particularly difficult to detect.
Security analysts say the spyware is capable of extracting sensitive personal data, including messages, emails, photos, and even real-time location information. In some cases, it may also activate microphones or cameras, effectively turning compromised devices into surveillance tools.
The exploit reportedly affects outdated versions of iOS, prompting urgent calls for users to install the latest security patches. Apple has since released updates designed to close the loophole and strengthen system defenses.
Researchers involved in identifying the flaw describe the spyware as highly targeted, suggesting it may have been used in surveillance operations against specific individuals rather than broad, random attacks. This aligns with patterns seen in past incidents involving state-linked or commercial spyware tools.
While Apple did not publicly attribute the exploit to a specific group, the company acknowledged the sophistication of the attack and emphasized that such threats are rare but serious. The firm noted that advanced spyware typically targets journalists, activists, government officials, and high-profile individuals.
The advisory highlights Apple’s continued rollout of security features such as Lockdown Mode, which is designed to reduce attack surfaces for users who may be at higher risk of targeted cyber intrusions.
Cybersecurity experts warn that users running outdated software remain the most vulnerable, as attackers often exploit known weaknesses that have already been patched in newer versions.
Apple has urged all iPhone users worldwide to update to the latest version of iOS immediately, enable automatic updates, and review device security settings to reduce exposure.
The company reiterated that keeping devices up to date remains one of the most effective defenses against evolving cyber threats, particularly as spyware tools become more sophisticated and harder to detect.
