Uamuzi Foundation Champions Inclusive Civic Engagement Amidst Voter Registration Drive

In light of ongoing national voter registration efforts, organizations and stakeholders are working diligently to ensure all citizens fully understand and embrace their civic roles.

This movement was the focus of Signs TV Breakfast Show, where host Alan Herbert welcomed Timothy Mabango, a representative from the Uamuzi Foundation, to discuss the organization's comprehensive advocacy work.

The Uamuzi Foundation operates as a social enterprise dedicated to advancing social justice. It places a specific and urgent focus on marginalized groups, namely the youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), who are entitled to equal economic, political, and social rights.

According to Mabango, the organization recognizes the power of modern tools, hence it integrates technology and data into its advocacy strategies to maximize impact.

Mabango urged the youth to stand firm and resurrect the country by registering as voters, adding that they constitute the nation's largest population and, consequently, the single largest voting bloc in the democratic space.

A major concern raised during the interview was the persistently low representation of PWDs, which falls below established constitutional thresholds.

Mabango noted that while a robust legal framework exists, compliance remains critically low, further calling upon policymakers, advocates, and stakeholders to increase awareness regarding the rights and responsibilities of persons with disabilities.

The core legal mandate stems from Article 54(2) of the Constitution, which requires the State to ensure the progressive implementation of the principle that at least five percent (5%) of the members of the public in all elective and appointive bodies are PWDs.

The discussion emphasized that achieving genuine democratic participation necessitates collective commitment and a unified vision centered on inclusion and equal opportunities for every segment of society.
