Ishiara residents in Mbeere North, Embu County, protest over the poor state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital

Two people were killed following violent clashes between police and protesters at Ishiara Market in Mbeere North, Embu County, after demonstrations over the poor state of services at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital turned chaotic.

The protests, which began earlier in the day, saw residents pour into the streets to demand urgent improvements at the hospital, accusing authorities of neglecting a critical health facility serving thousands in the region.

Locals cited a range of challenges affecting the hospital, including persistent shortages of essential medicines, inadequate staffing levels, lack of functional equipment, and the absence of reliable emergency services such as ambulances.

Anger among residents reportedly escalated as protesters blocked sections of the road near the busy market centre, disrupting transport and business activities as they sought to draw attention to their grievances.

Police officers were deployed to the area to restore order, but the situation quickly deteriorated into running battles as officers attempted to disperse the demonstrators.

During the confrontation, gunshots were reportedly fired, leading to the deaths of two individuals who are believed to have sustained fatal injuries in the chaos.

Several other people were also injured during the clashes, according to eyewitness accounts, although authorities had not immediately released an official tally of those wounded.

Security agencies have since launched investigations into the incident, with officials indicating that the circumstances surrounding the use of live ammunition will be a key focus.

Residents have accused police of using excessive force in handling what began as a peaceful protest, and are now demanding accountability and justice for those who lost their lives.

The incident has heightened tensions in the area, with community leaders urging calm even as calls grow louder for immediate reforms at the hospital and a comprehensive probe into the deadly confrontation.
