Turkish airlines plane land at Koko Kenyatta international airport
Turkish Airlines has resumed direct flights to Mombasa after a five-year hiatus, marking a major boost to the coastal city’s tourism and trade sectors.
The maiden flight landed at Moi International Airport on Monday morning and was received with a water cannon salute by airport authorities. According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), the airline will now operate three weekly flights between Istanbul and Mombasa.
The route will also feature an eight-tonne belly cargo capacity, enhancing trade links between Kenya and Turkey. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir welcomed the return, saying it reflects growing confidence in the port city as a key international destination.
Turkish Airlines last operated direct flights to Mombasa in 2020 before suspending the route due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related travel restrictions.
