The biggest football spectacle on the planet is officially underway, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup has kicked off dramatically.

Co-host nation Mexico national football team announced their intentions early, securing a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa national soccer team in a highly charged opening fixture at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

The breakthrough came early when forward Julian Quiñones capitalized on a costly defensive lapse from South Africa, calmly finishing to hand the hosts an important advantage and sending the home supporters into celebration.

South Africa, representing African hopes on football’s biggest stage, attempted to respond with moments of promise, but struggled to find rhythm against an organized Mexican side determined to control proceedings.

As the intensity of the contest grew, so did the tension.

The match soon descended into one of the most chaotic World Cup opening fixtures in recent memory, with discipline becoming a major talking point. South Africa were reduced in numbers after two separate dismissals in the second half, significantly shifting momentum in Mexico’s favor.

Experienced striker Raul Jiménez then sealed the result with a powerful second goal, putting the game beyond reach and ensuring Mexico opened their campaign with maximum points in Group A.

Late in stoppage time, Mexico were also shown a red card, bringing the total dismissals in the match to three, an unprecedented disciplinary record for a World Cup opening game and a moment certain to dominate global football discussions.

Mexico play South Korea next in what promises to be another intense fixture, and South Africa takes on Czechia.
