Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes has completed a club-record transfer from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth a reported £85 million, becoming the most expensive signing in Tottenham's history. The 21-year-old signed a long-term contract after successfully completing his medical, with the Premier League club confirming the transfer on Thursday.

Fernandes arrives in north London after an outstanding individual campaign despite West Ham's relegation from the Premier League. The Portugal international made 38 league appearances during the 2025–26 season, impressing with his composure, passing range and ability to dictate play from midfield. His performances established him as one of the Premier League's brightest young talents.

Tottenham beat competition from Manchester United to secure Fernandes' signature. Reports indicated United were interested in the midfielder but declined to match Tottenham's £85 million valuation, allowing Spurs to complete the deal.

Speaking after the move was announced, Fernandes expressed his excitement at joining Tottenham and revealed that head coach Roberto De Zerbi played a decisive role in his decision. He said conversations with De Zerbi convinced him that Tottenham was the ideal place to continue his development because they shared the same football philosophy and ambition.

De Zerbi welcomed the signing by describing Fernandes as a midfielder with exceptional technical ability, intelligence and maturity. The Italian coach said the Portuguese international possesses the quality, consistency and work ethic required to thrive in Tottenham's high-intensity system despite his young age.

Fernandes began his professional career at Sporting CP before spending a season on loan with Estoril Praia, where he helped the club reach its first domestic cup final in 80 years. He joined Southampton in 2024 before moving to West Ham in 2025 for a reported fee of more than £40 million.

The midfielder also made his senior debut for Portugal in April, earning recognition for his rapid rise at club level. His performances over the past two seasons have established him as one of Portugal's most promising midfielders.

Fernandes becomes Tottenham's fifth signing of the summer transfer window as the club continues an extensive rebuilding project under De Zerbi. Spurs narrowly avoided relegation after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season and have moved aggressively in the transfer market to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.

For West Ham, the transfer provides significant financial resources as the club prepares for life in the Championship following relegation. The sale is expected to play a key role in funding a major squad rebuild ahead of the new season.
