The Voice Show hosted Ashley Majaya, a seasoned mental health professional from Pamoja Mental Health & Safeguarding Network, with over 27 years of clinical experience across the private and charitable sectors in the UK.
As a Zimbabwean-born psychiatric expert, Ashley brings knowledge rooted in a personal history of caregiving. Having grown up in a family of caregivers, he developed an early understanding of the challenges people face, which now informs his professional practice.
A strong believer in holistic support and safeguarding, Ashley’s work perfectly aligns with Pamoja’s mission: empowering individuals and communities through culturally sensitive, evidence-based care.
During the discussion, Ashley specifically addressed the intense pressure placed on men. He noted that men often feel compelled to prove their strength and capability to society, which frequently results in them hiding any signs of distress or not sharing what they’re going through.
His core message to men is powerful and clear: seeking help is crucial and is not a sign of weakness.
Looking toward prevention, Majaya emphasized the foundational role of the family. He urged parents to be supportive of their male children early on to help prevent the onset of mental health issues.
According to Ashley, the first step in tackling this societal problem is awareness. Ultimately, he concluded that empowerment at an early age is the key to effectively managing and taming mental health challenges within the community.
