Sexual health is a cornerstone of a person's well-being, touching on their mental, social, emotional, and physical health.

However, these essential services are too often inaccessible to women in wheelchairs or those with visual disabilities, who are Deaf, or who have intellectual disabilities.

According to studies, women with disabilities’ sexual health is a big concern, which we at Signs TV highlight during this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.

While some studies show lower rates of unintended pregnancy for women with disabilities, they still experience greater difficulties in accessing medical services, including for reproductive health issues, and are often denied autonomy over their sexual and reproductive choices.

The National Reproductive Health Policy of 2007 envisages addressing the special reproductive health-related needs of PWDs.

It is important to have this implemented so that women with disabilities can comfortably get the services.

To bridge this critical gap, ensuring the quality of service must be the first step. Since quality depends so heavily on the service providers, it is necessary to first ensure they are fully aware of the specific needs of PWDs.

Simultaneously, the physical, environmental, infrastructural, and informational barriers faced by PWDs must be eliminated.

This requires aggressive and effective public education alongside the full, unwavering implementation of the national disability policy.

Also, the government should ensure that the existing and proposed physical infrastructure is universally accessible and friendly to PWDs in all aspects.

Make reproductive health and HIV/AIDS information available and tailor it to suit the specific needs of PWDs.
