International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies

The simple act of looking at a clear blue sky can bring a sense of calm and rejuvenation. This feeling is not just a luxury; it underscores a fundamental necessity of clean air.

As the world observes the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, we are reminded that this basic need is under threat, particularly for vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities.

Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental health risks of our time. It's an invisible enemy, with tiny pollutants penetrating deep into our lungs and bloodstream.

These pollutants, which include black carbon and methane, are strongly linked to both health issues and global warming.

These harmful particles are responsible for approximately one-third of deaths from stroke, chronic respiratory disease, and lung cancer.

For persons with disabilities, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, clean air is not just a matter of comfort; it's a matter of survival. Their bodies are often more susceptible to the damaging effects of pollutants, which can be exacerbated by poor air quality.

Air pollution knows no borders. It’s a global problem that requires a global solution, transcending countries, sectors, and even political divides.

On this day, we call upon everyone, governments, corporations, civil society, and individuals, to join the race for solutions.
