Gun Salute, The Sound Of Respect

A gun salute is a deeply symbolic and ceremonial act involving the discharge of rifle fire. Its origins trace back to traditions where the act of firing cannons was a necessary demonstration of peaceful intent, as it rendered the weapons temporarily empty.

This custom gradually evolved into a highly formalized tribute, signifying respect and honor for high-ranking individuals and significant national occasions.

In the Kenyan context, the use of a gun salute is strictly regulated by protocol and is reserved for specific, solemn events.

Publicly, the most common association with this honor is the state funeral of a Head of State or other high-ranking dignitaries.

The precision of the tribute is important, as the number of rounds fired directly correlates with the individual's rank and status.

For instance, the 21-gun salute represents the highest honor, generally reserved for sovereigns, heads of state, and sometimes heads of government.

A profound example of this national tribute was witnessed during the military send-off for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

He was accorded a 17-gun salute by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), a gesture conducted with full military honors in line with the presidential proclamation issued by President William Ruto. As each blast echoed across the fields of Bondo, it symbolized the nation’s deep respect for Raila’s lifelong service to democracy, justice, and freedom.

This powerful tribute was concluded when a lone military bugler sounded the Last Post, the traditional bugle call that formally marks the end of a soldier’s duty.
