The National Youths Opportunities towards Advancement (NYOTA) project, officially launched by the national government, is designed with a focus on youth with disabilities to highlight a commitment to inclusivity.
Speaking during the launch at Kisii National Polytechnic (KNP), Broadcasting and Telecommunication Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke confirmed that the NYOTA project will prioritize and specifically target youth with disabilities aged between 18 and 35 to ensure they benefit from investment and self-reliance opportunities.
PS Isaboke affirmed, “We also target youths with Disabilities aged between 18 and 35 in the spirit of inclusivity.”
The NYOTA project's mandate is to significantly ease the country's rising unemployment rate for all young people.
The government plans to empower 70 youths aged 18 to 29 in each of Kenya’s 1,450 electoral wards, which includes registered refugees.
The project is geared towards empowering the approximately 1 million youths who leave schools annually.
PS Isaboke outlined the process: 70 youths per ward will enroll online, be screened, be picked, and be trained in financial skills before being awarded Sh50,000 to start income-generating projects. The application, screening, and selection will be done digitally to prevent manipulation.
Hosted by Kisii County Commissioner Joseph Kibet and Chief Principal Dr. John Akola, the PS assured that local administrators like chiefs and county commissioners will ensure youths from all villages, including those with disabilities, benefit.
Representing Governor Simba Arati, Deputy Governor Obebo affirmed the county government’s own commitment to youth empowerment, noting that 40 percent of County Executive Committee Members and 65 percent of staff are youths.
