FLONE Initiative, FES-Kenya Partner To Screen Documentary On Access To Public Transport For PWDs
FLONE Initiative in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES-Kenya) on Friday 25, August, 2023 held the first screening of a documentary on access to public transport by persons with disabilities.
The documentary, titled "The Accessibility of Public Transport Service in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area", features interviews with persons with disabilities, as well as public transport operators.
The documentary explores the challenges that persons with disabilities face in accessing public transport in Nairobi.
It also highlights some of the recommendations made by persons with disabilities (PWDs) to be incorporated into the transport sector in order to create an inclusive, safe, accessible, and affordable transport system for PWDs.
The event was attended by a number of stakeholders, including representatives from the government, and the private sector.
The screening was followed by a discussion moderated by Action Network for the Disabled Diversity and Inclusion officer Collins Ombajo.
This presented a valuable opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving access to public transport for PWDs. The recommendations made will be used to inform the development of the documentary.
The screening of the documentary was part of the FLONE Initiative's efforts to raise awareness about the importance of accessible transportation for people with disabilities.
According to the founder of the FLONE Initiative Naomi Mwaura, the organization hopes that the documentary will help to spur action from the government and the private sector to improve access to public transportation for people with disabilities.
The FLONE Initiative is a women-led organization, working towards the creation of safe, sustainable, and accessible public transportation spaces for women and vulnerable groups in Africa, by influencing behavioral change, generating knowledge, and movement-building.
