WORLD CUP: MATCHDAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS

6262-2 Image

England run riot against Iran

England made a remarkable start to their World Cup campaign as Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham were on target to inspire a 6-2 hammering of Iran in Monday’s Group B opener in Doha.

Bellingham’s opener shattered Iran’s hopes as he headed in his first senior international goal in the first half before Saka and Raheem Sterling put them in complete control before half-time.

Saka found the net again in the Second half before Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish completed the rout.

Mehdi Taremi struck twice for Iran but could not outplay the Dominance set by the Three Lions.

England play their second match against the United States on Friday and conclude their Group B fixtures against Wales on November 29.

Netherlands win late against Senegal

Late goals by Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen gave the Netherlands a 2-0 victory over African champions Senegal on Monday in their Group A clash.

Despite Senegal missing injured star man Sadio Mane, the Lions of Teranga put up a spirited fight and went ahead to dominate the game until Netherlands broke the deadlock.

PSV Eindhoven forward Gakpo got up in front of Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to head in a cross from De Jong in the 84th minute.

Substitute Klaassen then secured the late victory deep in injury time, following up to score after Mendy had saved Depay’s shot, who had also come off the bench.

The result leaves the Netherlands level at the top of Group A with Ecuador, who beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match on Sunday.

Louis van Gaal’s side take on Ecuador on Friday, while Senegal now face a must-win contest against Qatar.
