Uhai Festival Coastal Circuit Illuminates Mombasa with a Celebration of Inclusivity

The vibrant coastal city of Mombasa witnessed an extraordinary celebration of diversity as the Uhai Festival Coastal Circuit unfolded at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM). This momentous event coincided with the UN Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), creating a harmonious synergy of inclusivity and empowerment.

The festivities commenced with a spirited procession, symbolizing unity and solidarity, as participants marched from Tom Mboya Special School to TUM. Honourable Kenneth Ambani, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) of Public Service, Administration, Youth, Gender, Sports, and Social Services, Mombasa County, along with Mr. Khamis Juma, Chief Officer of Youth, Gender, Sports & Social Services in Mombasa County, inaugurated the event.

A kaleidoscope of activities unfolded, showcasing the talents and abilities of individuals from all walks of life. From the competitive spirits in sitting volleyball and short-stature football to the soul-stirring performances of poetry, drama, dances, and singing, the event was a testament to the rich tapestry of human potential.

A poignant moment was the launch of 'Unbound Voices, PWD Stories,' a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by Seif Jira, Executive Director of Dream Achievers Youth Organization (DAYO). The book stands as a testament to the unheard narratives within the PWD community, amplifying voices that are often marginalized.

Mr. Khamis Juma Kurichwa, in a compelling address, unveiled the County Government's strategies to ensure inclusivity and empowerment. Regardless of gender, religion, race, or status, the County Government is committed to creating opportunities for PWDs. Mr. Kurichwa disclosed plans to allocate a percentage of opportunities, including internships and gigs, specifically for PWDs. Furthermore, an ambitious Airlift Program is in the pipeline, aiming to send 1500 youths, including PWDs, abroad for job opportunities.

Representing the County Director of Education, Ms. Furaha Sebbeh expressed unwavering support for persons with disabilities in the education sector. Ms. Jemima Kutata, a champion of inclusion and disability rights in Kenya, shed light on the often-overlooked issue of psychological disability, urging the audience to extend their support to those facing mental health challenges.

The chief guest, Honourable Kenneth Ambani, emphasized the County Government of Mombasa's dedication to ensuring PWDs lead dignified lives. He highlighted ongoing collaborations with various stakeholders to provide comprehensive services to individuals with disabilities.

In essence, the UHAI Festival Coastal Circuit served not only as a celebration of abilities but as a beacon of hope, driving the mission of inclusivity and empowerment forward. The event encapsulated the spirit of unity, leaving an indelible mark on Mombasa's cultural landscape.
