Alleged zebra 🦓 meat confiscated in Kikuyu town, Kiambu county

Police officers, working jointly with officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), have seized more than 1,000 kilograms of meat believed to be zebra during an operation at a residence in Gikambura, Kikuyu, Kiambu County.

The large quantity of game meat was discovered early Wednesday when law enforcement executed a search warrant at the property. Authorities said the meat was suspected to have originated from zebras killed in the Naivasha area before being transported to Nairobi for further processing.

During the raid, officers also recovered chemicals that appeared to be in the process of being mixed with the meat, a finding that raised concerns about food safety and unlawful processing activities taking place at the site.

Three individuals were arrested at the scene in connection with the suspected illegal wildlife meat operation and were taken into custody by police and KWS officers.

KWS has a mandate to enforce wildlife protection laws and combat poaching and trafficking of protected species, including zebras, which are safeguarded under Kenyan conservation regulations.

Authorities have urged residents in Nairobi and surrounding counties to be cautious about purchasing meat from informal suppliers, noting that illegal bushmeat may pose health risks and contribute to the decline of wildlife populations.

Investigations into the full scope of the operation and the charges to be filed against the suspects are ongoing, and law enforcement has indicated that further actions may be taken as the case develops.
