International Cesarean Awareness Month

Having a baby is an act of creation that brings joy and celebration to the family.

The process of having a baby is known as Childbirth, which is described as the completion of a pregnancy period where a baby exits the internal environment of the mother through vaginal delivery or caesarian section.

The most common childbirth method worldwide is vaginal delivery which may not always be possible hence Cesarean delivery (C-section) may be necessary for the safety of the mother and the baby during emergencies.

It is for this reason that Caesarean Awareness Month is celebrated annually during the month of April to promote awareness about cesarean deliveries and their impact on maternal and infant health.

Cesarean section, also known as C-section, is the surgical procedure by which a baby is delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen.

According to a Breastfeeding Centre article, the goal of Cesarean Awareness Month is to empower parents with information and support to make informed decisions about childbirth, reduce unnecessary cesarean deliveries, and promote positive birth experiences for families.

A mother will need a CS under the following circumstances according to Cleveland Clinic

Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD): CPD is a term that means that your baby's head or body is too large to pass safely through your pelvis, or your pelvis is too small to deliver an average-sized baby.

Previous C-section: Although it’s possible to have a vaginal birth after a previous C-section, it’s not an option for everyone because of the reason which led to the process.

Placenta previa: In this condition, the placenta is attached too low in your uterus and blocks your baby's exit through your cervix.

Transverse lie: The baby is in a horizontal, or sideways, position in your uterus.

Breech presentation: In a breech presentation your baby's feet- or bottom-first in your uterus. Some providers may attempt to turn your baby, but a C-section will be necessary if that's unsuccessful.

Health conditions: Conditions like heart disease could worsen with labor during a vaginal birth hence a  C-section is necessary.

This month seeks to address certain issues which include;

A high rate of unnecessary cesarean deliveries which increases the risk of complications for both parents and babies.

Educate parents about the benefits and risks of different childbirth options, including vaginal birth and cesarean delivery.
