Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp felt his side’s 6-1 thrashing of Leeds on Monday night was by far their best performance of the season.

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota both netted twice with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez adding salt to injury, as the Reds dominated at Elland road scoring six goals from seven shots on target.

Liverpool have beaten Bournemouth 9-0 and Manchester United 7-0 this season but the German coach believes the display at Elland Road is their best.

“I think we forced a lot of errors, [scored] sensational goals, counter-pressing-wise it was the best for, I want to say, decades. My favourite part was in the 92nd minute – four players chased the poor boy on the ball from Leeds.

“I think it is the best game we played this season, in different aspects.”

Klopp’s side are in the hunt for European football next season and the win puts them in eighth place, with seventh place likely to qualify for some involvement.

Liverpool play Nottingham Forest next and a win will propel them to sixth, a position they may fancy getting, owing to the challenging season they’ve had so far.

Leeds on the other hand are clinging to straws as hopes of staying in the Premier League continue to fade.

They remain two points above the relegation zone, their goal difference advantage on those below them has been decimated.

“It’s hard to accept the game today, the result as well,” boss Javi Gracia said after the game.

“We lost composure during the game. We tried in the beginning. Maybe the first goal opened the game and maybe it came from a handball but we have to improve for the next game.”

Leeds take on Fulham, Bournemouth and Leicester, a trio of games that will likely make or break their season.
