Former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi has been elected as the Senate speaker.

According to Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, Kingi garnered 46 votes which he says surpassed the two-thirds threshold of 45 votes.

The exercise was unsuccessful in the first round after all candidates failed to get 45 out of 67 votes required for one to be declared winner.

Kingi’s win was a cakewalk after Azimio One Kenya candidate Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew from the race the last minute.

Former Vice President’s withdrawal staged a walked out by other Azimio senators who tried to seek for a postponement of the election but were dismissed by the Senate Clerk.

The Azimio One Kenya affiliated Senators, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna speaking outside parliament buildings, claimed to have raised objections towards how the election was to be conducted but they were not properly addressed.

The senators further stated that they had concerns over the lack of integrity.

Meanwhile, Kingi will be deputized by Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri, this is after Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo who was the only competitor withdrew his bid.

Kingi during his swearing in vowed to perform to his utmost ability the constitutional responsibilities  and duties of the office of speaker.
